Apple temptation

Anyone remember The Computer Chronicles, hosted by Stewart Cheifet? I totally used to watch that. Turns out the Internet Archive has a bunch of episodes online, including one on the Mac, which aired in 1985. (Link via Foreword.)

Speaking of computers and the aforementioned platform specifically, should I make the switch? (I have a feeling I know what the majority of your responses will be.) I’m not in the market for a new laptop just yet, but the Gateway which has served me admirably for three and a half years is showing signs of age. For one thing, it’s having battery and power issues, which, yes, can probably be solved with some new parts, but… I want a new computer! There, I’ve said it. My consumerism is laid bare. I haven’t made a major tech purchase in a few years and I want new stuff.

I had been looking at the Dell website (my company has some discount deal with them), but then I naïvely wandered over to the Apple site—a somewhat potentially dangerous detour, for my pocketbook at least—and began to fall under the dreamy Apple spell. We’ll see. I shall weigh my options and bide my time. It’s taking every ounce of self-control I can muster.

I floated my consideration of a PowerBook to the boyfriend, and he says if I get one, he’ll be “insanely jealous.” That’s right, I could be fooling around on the side with one sexy, powerful 15-inch machine.

Buy a Mac! Buy a Mac!!

I’d say go the Mac route, but only if you’re unwilling to switch to a Linux-based machine/operating system. I’m sad to say this as a huge fan of my Sony machine, but Windows really seems to be tanking in the face of higher technology.

…et des bonnes fêtes de Bastille!

duh. Mac is the only way to go. They’re the only ones innovating (now? for 20 years? in the future? yes…) and are just miles ahead of the rest. Easiest machine to use this side of a toaster and it’s pretty to look at.

Who needs 100,000 software titles on a PC if the only 5 you really need are Mac-native?

good luck!

Do I *really* need to tell you my opinion on this?
By the way — I can get Powerbooks at an education discount. ::grin::

As a former PC user, and having two different friends ask me yesterday for help with their PCs (one a spyware problem, the other random crashes, my response in both cases was, “I’ve got no idea, I’m on a mac now”), I have to say go for it.

I don’t know what your needs and budget are, but I love my little 12" iBook G3, and if you’re on a budget the iBook G4 is a really good alternative to a PowerBook.

Don’t bother with a Powerbook, just get an iBook. The difference doesn’t really justify the price, and the iBooks are sturdier.

I have to agree on the Powerbook/iBook debate. The iBook is awfully nice, it costs less, it weighs less… and it’s much sturdier. I’m on my second Powerbook in a few years, and I’m tired of worrying about the scratches on it and other aesthetic flaws over time. I never worried about the iBook, it always looked good.

Whatever you do, don’t get a Dell. They outsourced their customer support to India and you’ll never get any help from them. I’ve heard some horror stories. They’ve gone from the best customer support service, to the absolute worst. Don’t do it!
